Jocelyn + Austin: Rx for love

Jocelyn and Austin are the real life 'Grey's Anatomy', they fell in love while residents at the famed Harborview trauma unit. Many friends in their wedding party are ER doc's and nurses, very soulful, fun to be around and very open to my probing camera, speaking of which, many wedding videographer's tend to shoot the dancing sequences from the perimeter of the dance floor, maybe with a hot light trying to penetrate the action but usually just harshly bouncing off the nearest light colored shirt, that's not how I roll, it is a fine line to be apart of the action with one's camera yet be careful not to be intrusive, this comes from experience of feeling what the energy is like at the event and it helps that the wedding party has enjoyed your presence in the preceding hours leading up to the dancing and is happy to 'open up' to the camera. It was a pleasure to work alongside master photographer Kirk Mastin of Mastin Studio, one the elite wedding photographer's in the world. What can I say about the Arctic Club Hotel, my favorite hotel to shoot in.

Lauren and Joe: Wine Country Love

Of all the Sonoma wineries, Cornerstone Sonoma was made for a cabfare wedding film, the whole property is a giant art installation, some of it, visionary, some of it 90's art school bad but all of it quirky, bold and fun, a definite magnate for bay area couples Like Lauren and Joe who don't vibe with the Sonoma norm of aging oak casks, faux Tuscany facades and country club attitudes. Speaking of Bay Area, perhaps you the reader might be wondering where the idea for cabfare productions come from? I was a cab driver (Luxor Cab Co) for many years in San Francisco in a previous life, ok, not that long ago, I was the classic moonlighter, actor, filmmaker, musician - cabdriver. I'm so grateful for those years of graduate level life experience, all of it channeled into my love of being of service, behind the wheel, behind a camera.

I so enjoyed Lauren and Joe's energy, they loved their wedding film, this is from Lauren about this advanced montage I sent to them ahead of the DVD;

"Every time we've watched the clip since, we fall in love with it even more. I don't know how you did it - it's as if the video is showing what we saw, and how we felt in a way we never could have described. I think the ceremony and our vows set the mood for the whole day, and having them in the clip was unexpected (mostly because its so odd hearing yourself speak!) and yet so appropriate. It is a work of art, and we could not be happier. Thank you thank you thank you!

A caveat about why Beirut is used as music in back to back blog posts, you, potential bride, groom, yes you, always choose your music for your film and as it happened, to couple's wanted Beirut tracks for their highlight montage's, as it happen's, Beirut, aka Zach Condon is one of favorite musical artists of recent years, Tres Bien!

Vanessa and Lee: Parisian Love

Vanessa and Lee met while studying in France and started dating in Paris, they wanted this epic romance to be imbued into their wedding day and so they made choices that reflected that, the most obvious was choosing the Arctic Club Hotel, perfect, the next hiring Bellingham designer, Steven Moore to imbue the event with a Parisian feel, I was told it was the first time the Arctic Club allowed open candelabra's at an event, ever, such is Steven's design prowess, notice the dessert table, I have never seen this at a wedding before, speaking of Steven, look for his wedding on the cabfare blog soon.

I had a blast shooting this wedding, Vanessa has an easy effervescence that pops off the screen, Lee has a low key charm and intelligence that helps shape such a watchable chemistry.

Whitney + Nate: fields of unconditional love

It was my first time in Walla Walla, Washington and I can say it quickly has become my favorite rural town in the Northwest, I hope to go back many times again. Whitney booked me from Alaska where she's an Attorney, she loved my work we had a couple phone calls and all was good, I was taken by Whitney's affable, positive nature, Nate has a similar easy going charm that makes their chemistry jump of the screen.

There are backyard weddings and then there are backyard weddings to end all backyard weddings, Jennifer's mom, Celeste, opened up her estate for the couple, bringing in True Color Events to once again produce magic, from Tom Douglas Catering to Molly Moon's Ice Cream from DJ Austin Beaver to photographers One Love Photo, these artists and craftspeople are at the very top of the Northwest wedding/event world and Im very fortunate to consistently work and be referred by such skilled and wonderful people. And then there's Jennifer and Brandon, if one was to pick a couple that 'fit's' my particular style of wedding filmmaking, it would be them, warm, smart, creative, healthy who are very much soulmates, yes, I did say that word soulmates, in this increasingly cynical of everything that is soulful society, I still deeply believe in true love and soul connection, you can see it in my work with couples and is at the very core of why after all these years, I stay put as a wedding filmmaker rather than moving on to become a gun for hire in the corporate commercial world, of which I could have done years ago. I relish that the films I make will be seen by perhaps thousands and especially the children of the couples I document, that they can 'take in' and be witness to their parents love in an artful and entertaining way, it's very gratifying to a visual storyteller, can the same be said for making commercials or corporate films? Me thinks not. BTW, the officiant is Jennifer's mom, Celeste, my favorite mother of the bride of all time!

Rachel and Joe met in while in school, they're still in school in Philadelphia, they're uber smart but also have a strong playful streak that I exploited at times, I guess you could say a cabfare wedding film experience is both 'fly on the wall' and 'direct action camera' meaning, if I sense the couple and the wedding party are down with having fun then I'm off to the races with idea's made up on the fly, of course I make sure the photographer get's their shots and then again what I direct helps their shots too, all this while working fast, with confidence, confidence that only comes from years of experience and a hungry desire to expand my craft as a visual storyteller. This was the first time working with photographer Amber French, Amber is awesome, period! She's so much fun and a very good shooter. Not enough can said about the crew at Sodo Park + Herban Feast the very best of Seattle event sites, I love working there.

This was wettest wedding we at cabfare productions have ever shot, thank goodness I worked with Heather and Jon of onelovephoto who are not only incredible shooters but fearless about taking couples out in inclement weather, of course Brianna was such a trooper, she actually had a bad flu but still went out in the rain for photo's. I really enjoyed working with Brianna, Matt and especially Jennifer, Brianna's sister who commissioned me to make a cabfare wedding film for her sister, btw, for those of you new to the cabfare 'look' when the frame suddenly becomes more square, the pixels more grainy and the video slightly faster in motion, that's when I'm shooting in super8 film, sometimes it's seamless, other times a little jarring, I tend to 'shoot from the hip' with the super8 camera's, anything goes, especially when kids get in on it, they think it's a toy camera and many ways, it is and there in lies it's magic.

I so enjoyed being a part of Rajit and Jess's wedding celebration. For me, it's not just about the day of shooting but hopefully, I can connect with the couple and their family and guests during the editing process and really enjoy all the folks involved as I spend ALOT of time alone, shaping and carving these films into finished pieces, so it really helps when all the folks involved are 'good' people and the energy is light and loving between families and friends and this is exactly why I so enjoyed working on this film. Neha and Sandeap met while students at UW, so it was only natural to get married there, until this wedding, I had no idea the University allowed weddings on the campus but man am I sure glad they do, a very dramatic backdrop for a wedding film indeed. This is a compilation of footage taken over 4 days of events. The wonderful Annette Lefebvre of LUXE Wedding design did an amazing job of pulling the UW event together at almost last minute as she and her team were hired with only a month to prepare, Indian weddings are the most complex of any ethnic group to organize due to the sheer numbers of guests that come, I believe this had over 400 guests plus a host of other variables, intricate customs to follow, I certainly am a huge fan as I used to live in India and know the culture intimately. If my clients have to once reach for the remote to fast forward because their wedding film is dragging, then Ive failed to do my job, ok, not entirely maybe they don't want to watch the drunk distant cousin getting sloppy, I know my clients are not going to watch 90 minutes of free dancing so why not show the best moments from all the dancing set to, well, dance music, or not, sometimes very slow acoustic, folky numbers work also, this clip is truly made up of moments we cook together into a moving meal, don't quote me on that. Lauren and Ethan and their loving families delighted me day after day, night after night while editing their film, can you feel the love? I could, sure beats making commercials about cat food, man we are so fortunate to be doing this. Oh yes, this lovely location is Hidden Meadows in Snohomish, WA they're a first rate and the grounds, surrounding fields are wonderful.

This wedding film is very sweet, earthy with incredibly good energy, I am yet again, I keep saying this but I mean it, yet again, so fortunate to work with couples and their friends, families that are just such good people. This wedding had it all, this special piece of heaven, Fireseed Catering is I think off the radar a little for the Northwest event venues but man, I sure hope I get to work there again, it's my new favorite place, amazing fresh organic food from their own garden, the space overlooks a lake and is wringed with bald eagles looking down at all the lovely goings on. Fireseed can accomodate a large wedding with a converted dry barn, its easy to get to on Whidbey Island, just really good energy all around. A shout out to Ben Blood, very talented photographer. Jen and Brodie gave me an awesome music list, big thanks to them for this song, that the ipad made famous.

Prestigious agency Drake Cooper of Boise commissioned me to make a film for Ski Idaho website promotion, no script just complete trust and freedom by Drake Cooper to create a film chronicling the artist collective Hensnchicks as they created a giant paper sculpture to hang smack in center of Bellevue Square Mall to promote skiing in Idaho. Everyone was such a pleasure to work with, I'm yet again, so grateful to work alongside such creativity and good peeps!

Tim is an MD and Jennifer a nurse at LA's famed Cedars Sinai Hospital, they chose the equally famed and opulent Davenport Hotel in Spokane for the reception after an intimate Church service at Jennifer's childhood church, I really liked the folk art charm of iconography at the Church, I felt I was in the Caribbean. Jennifer is not shy around the camera, I really enjoyed both their energy and easy going nature's, Jenn's mom and dad are shutterbugs and fun to be around. Ok, now the strange but true, the photographer, up from LA, Ion Hartunian, went to the same High School, Hollywood High the same year I did, Ion is a great guy with a skilled eye.

If you have watched this clip yet then my words here will never come close to describing the good energy and love between Holly and Sachin, the families and just the sheer fun of this two day event. They live in New York and found cabfare productions by doing a Google search of 'absolutely, unequivocally the worlds best east meets west wedding filmmaker....bar none' Ok, not true, I showed up in the next search they did, 'Seattle wedding dude with camera who can shoot straight'. We don't choose the music, the couple does, although we have pulled rank under extreme duress say Celine Dion or Kenny G tunes, this song 'the trapeze artist' by Iron and Wine and the fact there is a real trapeze artist in the film is one of those winks from the wedding gods, which tends to happen to us, allot. Those hard working blissful photographers are the dynamic duo Angie'n Ashley from 1000 Words Photography, we love working with them, can you tell? What can I say about Herban Fest, Sodo Park I think it's pretty much every wedding vendors favorite urban event spot. Flower's and design by Daniela Faget of Bella Signature Design and music by the fantastic brothers Tanveer and Kulveer of Veera Productions they know how to bring it with the Bhangra!

Ashley + Tyler: 1920's revisited

Ashley's parents Brad and Debra Peck own and have renovated to meticulous detail the Illustrious Moore Mansion in Pasco, WA , so it was only natural Ashley and Tyler would want a vintage themed wedding straight out of the 1920's. Ashley and Tyler were such a delight to work with, Ashley being a trained actor is very comfortable in front of the camera, she strikes the perfect balance between charm and playful radiance, a real delight to photograph. I enjoyed mixing super8 with HD footage for the signature cabfare look; warm, offbeat honing in on the moments that make up a special day, we may not have every shot technically perfect and to honest, I don't care, I care about finding that spark, the joy, the love if you will that my camera picks up from the soul and this couple has sparks 'n spades, don't quote me on that one but it sounds good. A big nod to Yakima based photographer Michael Fisk, excellent shooter and I loved that he had assistant's with reflective boards, really helps my work, I'm so fortunate I always get to work with innovative and talented photographers, I'm grateful. A rather polished preview for Hayden and Matt, Hayden is a successful wedding coordinator in LA moving up to Seattle, Matt is a filmmaker so cabfare productions was a natural fit for them. Not just another montage

Instead of just posting another highlight montage, I wanted to show how I edit 'open dancing' at a wedding. The wedding: Lesley Masin of Seattle's legendary Masin furniture family and Jeff Grosvenor a Hollywood TV producer, the opulent Fairmont Hotel was the backdrop, Leslie's grandmother was married there 46 years before. You can't beat working with the all star crew of Solomon Event Planning and Della Chen Photography, the A team. I've been working with Stephanie Solomon for many years now and am very appreciative of her support. Della is one of the most talented photographers working anywhere in the country and she's just so much fun to work with, she's effortless in her technique, complete command of her craft yet relaxed and unhurried, I aspire to shoot like her, completely non traditional, shooting what catches her eye in the moment not from some 'go to' formula. So this clip goes from cake cut into dancing to rock'n 80's cover band 'Mister Miyagi', it may look like I have 5 camera's going but no, just one, such is the fun of editing 'out of the norm'.

cabfare productions was invited to attend the Grace Ormonde Book Launch party in Vancouver, BC I took my gear to to do a quick spot for my friend Daniela Faget of Bella Signature Design as she designed an uber eye popping beauty of a table top for the event. It quickly turned into a piece for Ms. Ormonde's Wedding Style Magazine Blog as I strong armed Grace into a couple interviews, I get a little pumped when behind the camera and have no problem asking for what I want from anyone, take away the camera and I'm a meek introvert. Now you know the secret to the cabfare magic! Ms. Ormonde and her partner Yanni Tzoumas, Executive Editor of Wedding Style loved the video. Really fun to work with all wonderful staff at the Magazine in Rode Island.

Emily and Steve: An EMP Wedding

Orgasmic eye candy with this delightful couple providing it's warm and resonant heart. The beginning interview is a good example of our use of the talking heads format intercut throughout the entire wedding film, in this case towards the end leading into the ending montage. The design work was done by everyone's favorite duo team of Jessie and Travis at True Color Events, how about that color scheme and lighting design, yeah, that's what I'm talk'n bout! For a total team effort, Emily made the industrial mini wire tree's. It was great fun to work with the excellent photo team Melody and Bryan of Amore Studios, make sure to check out their fantastic photo's of this event. I'm so fortunate the Universe sends clients like these to me. In keeping with the tree theme, the ending shot of the eternal tree of life is the actual model from the Darren Aronofsky underrated epic of time travel true love 'The Fountain". As it seems to happen all the time many of the edit points happen to fall perfectly with lyric references in the re mixed Louis Armstrong song, it's all an organic process of just letting the edit flow from the heart. We pride ourselves in not having a formula besides our trademark white fade out, formula's are death to a creative mind.

Wiggs and Dave: Love with a capital L

Elizabeth found my website, watched a couple films and approached me with a proposition, would I film her wedding and oh yeah, she's writing a book with her mom, mega best selling author Susan Wiggs on all things weddings, how could I refuse? In the last year Elizabeth, Dave and the Wiggs family have become my friends, this is one of the many reasons I love what I do, such wonderful people I get to work with and sometimes befriend.

I think you'll agree Elizabeth and Dave have a love that just goes to the core and essence of a union, they have such a deep respect and friendship but even more important they're both very happy with who they are and grateful for every day. They have this intangible depth that belies their youth, a vitality and life force, they glow.

To have future generations watch the filmic poem I made for them just fills me with so much joy that I want to sing in the streets, in fact that's what I'll do right now, I'm gonna grab my Takamine and head out. Organic Farmers Get Married!

This delightful couple, Catherine and Ronny, have deep roots in the organic farming community in Washington Sate. I had never been to Camp Korey, a kids summer camp in the sprawling Carnation Milk Facility. This was another design and food perfect event brought to you by Jessie and Travis of True Color Events, they make my job, capturing wonderful images, a videographers paradise. We pride ourselves in not using a formula to crank out the video's but if your beginning to notice that every cabfare wedding film ends with a long white fade out, well, you're paying attention and I do it because I feel white is a color of love, optimism and a future continuum, where as with black the story is over, the end, everything about a union of two people is about beginning a life journey so how can the wedding film end in black, the end? Of course this is an intuitive understanding, just like most things we do at cabfare productions, intuitive filmmaking is always more fun than a formula which leads to burn out in the end. What if you were to import a Tuscan hill town into the Northwest? De lille Cellars http://www.delillecellars.com is that place, they do a limited amount of weddings a year, makers of very high end wines, their landscaping is exquisite, great attention to detail. I think we can all agree this is a very handsome couple and very down to earth, they loved their finished wedding film. Kathryn was a joy to work with as was her wonderful mom who did all the design work for the wedding. It was a pleasure to work with photographer Tasha Owen a real pro with a great sense of humor.

We are so grateful to work with clients like Jenny Lam, an extraordinarily talented graphic designer, she created a unique wedding experience. First by somehow landing the first official wedding ever held at the internationally recognized Dunn Gardens in North Seattle. Then working closely with internationally known wunder designer/florist Steven Moore to create a simple yet lush environment. We were privileged to work with super talented photographer Taylor Swedberg and his wife.

I love these two, very special souls. Both pediatric specialists at Seattle Children's Hospital. They recently opened a pediatric clinic in Uganda. I'm very grateful the Universe sends me so many wonderful couples like Maneesh and Kelly. They renew and invigorate me to give people a special visual document of their life that hopefully will touch many with love radiated, like in India the idea of the touchstone.

A few years back I shot the LA portion of the feature length documentary 'Two Headed Cow' about the legendary Dexter Romweber of the Flat Duo Jets. I believe the film is still playing on the fest circuit and to those who have seen it, forgive the slight re arranging of the edit this is just to show as a reel, I could not bring myself to just clip images together set to music, I hope this window into the film will inspire folks to try to find the film and also support Dexter as an artist, he is a wonderful soul.
